Frequently asked questions
OpenRemote is pre-launch, so a lot of specifics aren't decided yet. Here's what we can say honestly today.
OpenRemote is a pocket-sized hardware AI assistant — a small device that runs Linux, handles phone calls on your behalf, and can be programmed. It's a dedicated piece of hardware, not a phone app.
We haven't announced a ship date. OpenRemote is pre-launch and heading to Kickstarter; specific timing will be shared when the campaign details are finalised, not before.
It means the device is a small general-purpose computer, not a sealed appliance running proprietary firmware you can't see under the hood. Day to day, most people will just use it as-is; for anyone who wants to dig deeper or extend it, Linux is the layer underneath.
We're designing OpenRemote to work as a standalone device rather than depend on a phone being nearby. Exact setup and pairing requirements haven't been finalised and will be shared closer to launch.
Some functionality is expected to run on-device, and some may depend on connectivity — we haven't finalised the split between on-device and cloud processing yet, so we're not making specific offline claims at this stage.
We haven't finalised our open-source plans. The device runs Linux, and we know that matters to a lot of people who might back this — we'll share specifics on licensing and any open components as they're decided.
In general, a Kickstarter campaign lets people pledge money toward a project before it ships, often in exchange for a unit once it's produced. Campaigns typically have a funding goal and a deadline, and specifics vary by project. We'll publish OpenRemote's actual campaign terms, pricing, and rewards when the campaign goes live — none of that is set yet.
